Fraktion Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen im Landtag von Sachsen Anhalt
About the customer
The parliamentary group of BÜNDNIS 90/DIE GRÜNEN in the state parliament (Landtag) of Saxony-Anhalt represents the party with six elected members, focusing on issues such as climate protection, environmental conservation, and social policy.
About the project
In 2022, we were commissioned to carry out the technical implementation of the new website design for the Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen parliamentary group in Saxony-Anhalt. Some of the key factors in this project were ensuring the website was as sustainable and accessible as possible. The large volume of image material to be used presented a particular challenge. Ultimately, however, through targeted resource optimisation, we were able to ensure that each visit to the website produces just 0.38g of CO2.
How Neos made the difference
Resource-efficient with image compression and lazy loading
For this project, it was very important to the Green parliamentary group in Saxony-Anhalt — and, of course, to us as well — to prioritize sustainability in the website itself, in order to live up to the party's goals. The particular challenge lay in the sheer number, size, and quality of the images on the site.
To keep emissions as low as possible, we implemented several measures:
- The website runs on a server powered by green electricity.
- Images on the website are compressed in Neos and optimized for the output medium.
- We use lazy loading across the pages to conserve resources.
Two-factor authentication for Neos
Another feature developed as part of this project was two-factor authentication for logging into the Neos backend. This significantly raises the security standards for accessing the website's editing interface.
To implement image compression, we integrated our own custom-built Neos package for converting images. Through image linking, we were able to ensure that images are always delivered in the optimal format for the output device. This consistently minimizes resource consumption. The deliberate use of lazy loading, especially for long-form pages, likewise guarantees short loading times and thus keeps resource consumption as low as possible.
Because we used Neos as the CMS, the Green parliamentary group in Saxony-Anhalt benefits from the intuitive usability of the interface for managing content. Since Neos is an open-source product, all features developed in the context of this project flow back into the overall product in this case as well — including the image compression package and the 2FA feature. As such, this project made a significant contribution to expanding Neos.
